AltStore PAL, a third-party App Store developer, announced on April 17th that it has launched a third-party product in the European Union as part of the Apple App Store. Positioned as an “open source, crowdfunded app store for independent developers,” the app store allows developers to distribute their apps for free through AltStore PAL, with the option to distribute to patrons through the built-in Patreon integration. The store currently includes two apps: Delta, a recently launched Nintendo emulator, and Clip, a clipboard manager for iOS that runs indefinitely in the background, listening for clipboard changes and saving content. AltStore is already available for iOS, but the previous one required running a companion program called AltServer on a Mac or PC, which essentially made iOS think the user was the developer of the app. It’s worth noting that users interested in trying out the AltStore PAL will have to pay €1.50 per year, which is used to cover Apple’s Core Technology Fee (CTF) for installing the app marketplace itself, which is available for download via the AltStore.io website.
Nintendo Emulator Delta now on the App Store
After last week’s copycat controversy, Delta, the Nintendo emulator developed by Testut Tech, is now officially available on the App Store. The emulator is compatible with GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64, Super NES, and Nintendo Entertainment System game mirrors. In addition, Delta supports a variety of gamepads, including the Nintendo Switch Pro controller, Nintendo Switch Online controller, iOS-enabled Sony and Microsoft gamepads, MFi controller, and other Bluetooth and wired keyboards. The emulator is free to download for iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS 14.0 or later, Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 11.0 or later, or Apple Vision Pro.

Meta Releases Llama 3, Next Generation of Open Source Models
On April 19, Meta released Llama 3, a new generation of large-scale open-source language models that are now available in two parameter sizes, with 8B and 70B parameters, and which Meta says show significant improvements in response times to prompts, reductions in errors, refusals to answer questions, and reasoning power. In the MMLU General Knowledge Benchmark, Llama 3’s 8B model significantly outperformed Gemma 7B and Mistral 7B, while the 70B model slightly outperformed Gemini Pro 1.5.
In a blog post, Meta claimed that while benchmarking is useful for understanding the capabilities of AI models, it is not perfect because the dataset used for benchmarking may have been part of the model’s training, meaning that the model may have “known” the evaluator’s questions. meta said that human evaluators have also rated Llama 3 as outperforming other models, including OpenAI’s GPT-3.5. Meta suggests that human evaluators also rated Llama 3 higher than other models, including OpenAI’s GPT-3.5. In addition, Meta has created a new dataset that includes, but is not limited to, use cases such as advice-seeking, summarizing, and creative writing to simulate real-world scenarios in which Llama 3 might be used. Finally, Meta states that the larger version of the model currently being trained (with parameters exceeding 400B) is expected to be able to understand longer commands and data strings, and to be able to perform more modal responses such as ‘generating images’ or ‘transcribing audio files’.
Samsung Announces Exynos 5400 5G Modem
On April 18, Samsung Electronics announced the Exynos 5400 5G modem, which is manufactured using the 4nm EUV process and supports two-way satellite communication capabilities. It also has built-in support for NB-IoT NTN and NR NTN networks and is compatible with both millimeter wave and sub-6GHz 5G network standards. Currently, some of the devices in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series have already adopted the Exynos 5400 5G modem. Foreign media revealed that it is expected that the Pixel 9, which may be released this year, will also be equipped with this modem.
Recently, the foreign media AssembleDebug by analyzing the code of Google AI Core and other applications, revealed the details of some local AI functions in the Pixel 9 phone. These include TEXT_TO_IMAGE, which automatically generates images locally based on text input, and OCR, which uses local models to improve the accuracy of text recognition in images. In addition, the QUESTION_TO_ANSWER feature allows the phone to answer user questions based on local AI. These features show possible new advances in enhancing the local AI processing capabilities of the Pixel 9.
