Thoughts on Computer Security

When it comes to the said term, Computer Security, here’re the things to include. Scroll for details.

Part One: Hardware Security

First and foremost, I highly recommend enabling an UPS device to your personal computer or your own computer network.

What’s an UPS device? Why?

UPS, Uninterruptible Power Supply, is also known as Uninterruptible Power Source. See? The name itself is quite easy to understand. It was created to mainly help avoid power surges. Such a power backup would be the one when your house, office even company runs into a sudden electrical problem, or simply, the electricity supply system is not steady due to some reason – this would also hurt the motherboard in your case.

How to choose a UPS?

It depends on situation. For a desktop PC, think about the following factors:

  • Your investment
  • Capacity. Choose one that meets your electricity needs. Example, you should take control of how many uses your computer, monitor, additional devices, and other components.
  • Output. Make sure the one you’re going to buy has enough outlets to protect your hardware.
  • Run Time. How long will the device run when your power becomes unavailable?
  • Monitoring. Need a fancy light only? Or, you need to manage a small local computer network? For the latter option, you had better gain a more efficient UPS management system equipped with relevant software and/or user interface, such as an administration URL/tool.

Then, you can give one of the following brands a try:

  • APC, such as Back-UPS 450VA Network 40 UPS (mode, BN4001)
  • CyberPower: 450VA Battery Back-Up System (SE450G)
  • Tripp Lite: SmartPro 1000 VA Tower Digital UPS (SMART1000LCD)
  • Monster: Core Power 350 3-Outlet Surge Protector (121886-00)

How to manage your UPS like a pro?

  • Remove some potentially unimportant device like printer in time
  • Add some limitation to stream videos, listen music and such
  • Always make your own computing equipment a high priority

Part Two: Data Security

Data security means protecting data, such as a database, sensitive information, from destructive forces and from the unwanted actions of unauthorized users.

Then, how to maintain your own ID security and e-security? Well my responses are very inspiring. The following proactive tips will help enhance your lines of defense when using the risky Internet:

  • Always keep your operating system and anti-malware / antivirus program up-to-date (up-to-minute) & live (* enable the real-time protection mode when working or downloading something from the Web). This will hugely decrease the risk of infecting zero-day attack.
  • Always go to official resources; and avoid, at least test a 3rd-party download even an unknown file or attachment before opening it. This helps avoid those bloated setup files. Or, you can consider installing a VMware Station only if your computer meets its system requirements.
  • Learn how to customize your computer system the proper way. Examples are, ridding of some unused even pre-installed apps, services and other sponsored programs, removing some unused even unauthorized items/installations from programs list and/or browser settings, and such.
